In search of the Highlands: Day 3

Touring Skye
Quairang, Skye

The Sligachan river (24 miles -36min-  A87)
Legend said that anyone submerging their face for seven seconds on the cold water of Sligachan river will retain, as some sort of Dorian Gray, their youthful and beauty eternally intact. The legend comes from the tale of a Skye-heroine who had been disfigured after fighting against a rival clan and the Fairie Queen who gave her back her beauty after immersed the heroine in the river.

Portree (10,5 miles -16 min- A87)
Don’t miss the biggest town in the isle of Skye, the picturesque Portree. Its colourful pier, designed by Telford, who designed as well the village of Ullapool, fringed by cliffs is the main attraction.

Hiking the Faerie Glen (14,2 miles -24 min-  A87)
If you don’t believe in fairies, you will after visiting the Faerie Glen. Probably the most vibrant green grass you could possibly ask for, the Faerie Glen is an extremely quiet small area with conic hills, thunderous waterfalls and minute lochs on the west coast of the Isle of Skye. A place suitable for meditation, legend says that it is there where faeries hold their secret meetings. Believe this or not, the place has an authentic aura of whimsical mystery. Again, hiking to the waterfalls is not recommended if you suffer from vertigo, as the paths are narrow enough and at some points too close to the precipice.

*Access: Take the A832 out of the north-east end of Rosemarkie; soon after passing the Plough Inn you reach the car park, on your right

Quairang (21, 5 miles -35 min- A87 and A855)
On the Trotternish peninsula, Quairang is a great place for hiking. You can observe wild seabirds, sheep all around and small lakes on the way to the Old Man of Storr.

Kilt Rock (A855 Stuffin Road)
Dinosaur footprints and a spectacular view of the loud waterfall fed from Loch Mealt is all you can expect from the viewpoint at Kilt Rock. The outstanding pillars of rock which formed the pleats of Kilt Rock were formed between 61 and 55 million ago.
